By Lynda Barry
Edna Arkins, a young white girl, describes her coming of age in a racially mixed neighborhood and her friendship with Bonna Willis, a young black girl. The two girls share the same age, the same love of music and become best friends, but the white parents are afraid of their new African-American neighbors. When the friendship between Edna and Bonna grows, it glows with hope and humor. When the friendship is threatened, it reverberates with the power of tragedy.
