Dearest Students, Well here we are, at the verge of summer. I want to thank all of you for the good work you put out this year. We have gone through a lot together and you have made it happen. Tenth graders, I look at your growth and realize potential. Many of you have improved tremendously and have done "the hokey pokey and turned yourselves around!" (you fill in the last line) And for that, I am so very proud of you! Twelfth graders, it's been a pleasure!! You challenged me to become a better teacher. I know that you will do just great out there. I will leave you with one thought students: My father, of blessed memory used to always say to me, "Eva, watch where you're going" When I was young, I thought it meant just that, watch where you're going, as you leave the house, lock the doors..etc. But now I have come to understand the deeper meaning in this statment. Watch where you are going in life, my dear students. Have a vision. Know where you are at all times and know where you need to go and finally, what you need to do to get there. If you find yourselves in a bad situation, GET OUT and MOVE ON. Don't give up. Just go forth and follow your dreams and you will be fine. I love all of you. Have a great summer and don't forget, "Watch where you're going!" Love Always, Ms. Becker Announcements: Our class trip to Zuma Canyon was AWESOME!! Scroll down to see pictures on the right of this page. We learned about ecology, conservation, planting, native and non-native species, all California Bio Standards, of course. The rangers said that our group was one of their best ever and they asked that we definitely come back next year. In addition, the bus drivers never saw such well behaved students. I am so proud of you all! To top it all off we hiked up to the top of the canyon and saw the ocean. What a fun-filled day it was. Thank you for your participation. Thank you Dr. Joshua Penn M.D., our cardiologist, who came to class and gave us a magnificant lecture on the heart and showed our students a real live view of a heart pumping off a portable echo-cardiogram scanner. HOW COOL IS THAT??!! See AWESOME video below!! Our Physiology Medical Health Fair on April 22nd (Earth Day) was a hit! Please make sure to take a look at the amazing pictures posted under our photo album to the right. Thanks to all the students who did a fantastic job! What professional booths we had! The information you provided the Hami students was Grade A. I am really proud of all of you! Thank you Mrs. Katherine Tucker for helping us organize this event. Thank you, Tehilla Dayani, my right hand assistant. Much appreciated. The two of you saved the day. Thank you to the administrators for your support of this event, Mr. Garcia, Mrs. Mailman, Ms. Washington and Ms. Zuccaro. Thank you to The Booster Club, for donating the granola bars, water and decorations. Last, but not least, A BIG THANK YOU to the health experts, Dr. Dan Rude', DC; Dr. Jeffrey Benton, DC; Dr. Simpson, MD, Orthopedic (Bill's Dad), Audrey Gimpel, massage, and LA Fitness for coming out to help our students. ________________________________________________________________________ Oldies But Goodies: Congratulations to all my students who are in the Guys and Dolls production. You are simply AWESOME! Wow, you blew me away last Saturday night. Very impressive acting, playing, singing, dancing and staging. I am so very proud of you all!! ________________________________________________________________________ UCLA's Brain Research Institute (BRI) was here on March 3rd with their team of research experts. Our students were amazed as they viewed their collection of human brains and spinal cords and learned about the central and peripheral nervous systems. In addition, students learned about brain tumors, brain injury, concussions, memory loss and reflexes and engaged in brain activities to simulate brain function. ***View Pictures in My Album*** "Uncle Leslie", The Enchanted Gardener, came to visit our BIO classes on February 17th. He taught us about planting our dreams through getting in touch with nature and thereby our true inner selves. We planted beet plants and are watching them grow our seed dreams!! We learned about the importance of eating natural foods that help us feel better and think clearer. Thanks for making it a wonderful day, Uncle Leslie! You were awesome!! ***View Uncle Leslie's Keep The Beet Message*** (video clips attached) Physiology classes want to thank two fantastic guest lecturers that came in to talk to the students, Dr. Memsic, Oncology, Cedars Sinai Medical Center and Dr. Jeff Benton, Chiropractics, private practice. They really opened our eyes to the latest advances in their respective fields and inspired many of our students to look into both traditional and alternative medicine when they graduate. Thank you!! General: Please make sure to peruse through your class pages. Here you will find important information regarding upcoming homework, assignments, labs and quizzes. Check out updates on a regular basis, especially if you are going to be absent. I make a point to post powerpoint notes and the sort. We have started to do labs in both Biology and Physiology sections. As you know, funds are tight. If parents could pitch in, that would be great and much appreciated! Below is a list of items we need in abundance and on a continuous basis (n = 35-40 kids per class). Paper towels Sanitation wipes Antibacterial soap bottles Gloves Paper cups Plastic cups Paper bowls Paper plates Small plastic pill cup dispensers (or shot glasses) Plastic bags Plastic spoons, forks, knives Coffee stirrers or popsicle sticks Anyone bringing in a package/box of these items will receive 5-10 extra credit points towards their lab. Also, I am looking for parents to come in and volunteer during labs. It is a great experience for both students and parents to collaborate on these activities. Please email me at your convenience to let me know your availability and contact information. I will compile a list and get this going. Finally, if anyone works in the medical or allied health professions and would like to be part of our lecture series this year, please contact me asap, so that we can arrange a date for you to come in and talk to our students about your profession. The students are very interested in medical careers (especially the 12th graders who are graduating) and the more they hear from you about your positions, the greater the possibility that they will follow in your footsteps. Remember, you are their role models! If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to email me. Ms. Eva Becker Room 609
